Population research task

The aim of this activity is to identify and describe contrasting patterns of population growth in different countries around the world.
You will also suggest reasons for these contrasting patterns and explore various responses to manage population change.
You should use your class notes on Australia’s population growth and compare them with 2 other countries.

Task

Select 2 countries from the following list to compare with Australia:

• Japan
• China
• Kenya
• India

The data provided on this wiki (below) will aid in your analysis and help you to answer the questions that follow. However, you will be required to source your own information regarding the responses taken by the various countries to manage their population growth.

1. Describe the population characteristics of your chosen countries with Australia. (eg. infant mortality rate, birth and death rates, rate of natural increase etc.)
2. What are the similarities and differences between the countries’ population characteristics. Use PQE, tables, graphs and/or population pyramids to explain.
3. Using the 2010 and 2050 population pyramids for your selected countries, identify and describe the possible impact (Use SHEEPT where possible) of the projected population change.
4. Outline how each country has responded to the predicted change to their population structure. (this could include government policies, social planning etc)

Possible titles for your report:

• An analysis of population and population policies of Australia, X and Z.
• A report on population characteristics and population policies in Australia, X and Z.
• Comparing and contrasting population characteristics in Australia, X and Z.

Your report should contain paragraphs of information (use headings) in which you present facts, descriptions and comparisons. Illustrate the information in your paragraph with tables, images, population pyramids, graphs.
